The progress of laser technology has brought extensiveapplications of nonlinear optical (NLO) spectroscopy to analytical fields.Especially, optical second harmonic generation (SHG), which is one of themost popular NLO phenomena, has been successfully applied to the study ofinterfaces (surfaces). Several fine reviews on surface SHG spectroscopieshave appeared recently. The present article will concentrate on some newapplications of SHG: second harmonic microscopy (SHM) for microstructuralcharacterization, SHG interferometry for the determination of absolutemolecular orientation, surface analysis of microstructures, and somemolecular interactions at the interfaces.
